MSU offers campus tour of Native American art and culture
through new Geocaching Adventure Lab app

BOZEMAN (Feb. 6, 2020) – Montana State University (MSU) recently launched a tour of Native American art and culture on campus using a free app called Geocaching Adventure Lab, which was created by Geocaching HQ to allow users to create interactive location-based games and scavenger hunts.

The MSU tour uses GPS coordinates to take visitors to five campus locations that feature Native American art, history or culture. At each site, visitors answer a question, which then unlocks a hidden message and the next location. Both the app and tour are free to the public.

“We were invited by Geocaching HQ to be part of a pilot group of colleges and universities that will test the Adventure Lab platform and make our own unique tours,” said Suzi Taylor, director of the Science Math Resource Center, which worked with MSU’s American Indian Council to create the Adventure. “Our Center likes to try out new technologies for educational settings, particularly those that may be of interest to schools and teachers. This seemed like a great way to not only try out this new technology but also to showcase an important aspect of our MSU campus to visitors.”

In addition to the five campus sites, the MSU Adventure includes current and historical photos and video clips that help participants learn about Montana’s American Indian tribes. Other universities in the pilot group include campus orientation tours of, Engineering department events, and a Marine Sciences tour of campus.

To take the MSU tour, download the free Adventure Lab app from the App Store or Google Play, make an account, and search the Bozeman area for “Native American Art at Montana State University.
